26/08/2023 - 'Still parkrunning' by Alice

Yesterday we headed to Southampton parkrun and bumped into lots of friends which was lovely. I paced 38 minutes so David and I could run together but he ended up running better than we had expected and finished in 36:25 - the exact same time as he ran last week in Wales on an easier course 👏 Not quite a groundhog day challenge ticked off but close 😬 


Then we headed to town for Southampton Pride and I walked in the parade with the UHS contingent - really good fun. Then stuffed ourselves in Cafe Thrive Southampton with rainbow bagels 🏳️‍🌈

Alice and I have had quite a hard fortnight, interspersed with some lovely moments too - that's life with motor neurone disease I suppose.  We are adapting to new challenges at home and the problems that come with them, but there has also been laughter and humour too. We've been on a 3 date tour visiting the faded seaside glamour of the autumnal south coast, taking in Bournemouth, Southsea, and Cowes, spent precious time with our family and friends, and have met two olympic gold medal winning athletes in the same fortnight! I thought that losing my ability to walk would be the worst thing in the world but actually, I have accepted and adapted very well to the wheelchair. What is far worse, is the loss of strength in my upper limbs.  My arms can't go higher than my shoulders, so scratching my head, putting on a jumper, or my glasses, is hard. 03/06/2026 - 'Alice's ramblings' by Alice

David has lost his writing mojo.  Every time I ask him about the blog, he just says he hasn’t felt like putting it together, but I know lots of you follow our journey, so I thought I’d take to the reins for this update to give David some time off. We have had a few big events happen in our lives recently – having carers start, our new powered transfer aid, the Leeds marathon and going on a cruise.  Let’s start with the carers.  This all started quite unexpectedly to be honest.  I had been trying to juggle caring for David while still working at the hospital and taking care of the house.  In order to do this, I was getting up early myself and then getting David up.  This involved transferring from bed to bathroom for morning care, dressing, transferring into the living room, doing food prep for the day and then setting up him with breakfast and everything he needed for the day before setting off to work at 10am for 6 hours.  After work was usually shopp...

22/12/2025 - 'Last train to London' by David

One of the activities that I can no longer do is wrap Christmas presents. I hadn't given it a thought as last year, my hands were still strong. I was having such trouble that I asked Alice to film me trying to wrap my mum's present, and it has so far had 3000 views online. With Alice's help, we got the presents wrapped, and I've scribbled on the cards with my feeble little mitts. The end result is not unlike a child's handwriting. It would have made comedy viewing on wrapping day as I had been taking in multiple deliveries over the month of Christmas presents and Alice had been stockpiling all the parcels in my bedroom. Unfortunately they contained some of her presents and I was unable to open any packages so we had to devise system whereby Alice would open a parcel and then hold it out to me with her head turned so as not to see anything.
