26/08/2023 - 'Still parkrunning' by Alice

Yesterday we headed to Southampton parkrun and bumped into lots of friends which was lovely. I paced 38 minutes so David and I could run together but he ended up running better than we had expected and finished in 36:25 - the exact same time as he ran last week in Wales on an easier course 👏 Not quite a groundhog day challenge ticked off but close 😬 


Then we headed to town for Southampton Pride and I walked in the parade with the UHS contingent - really good fun. Then stuffed ourselves in Cafe Thrive Southampton with rainbow bagels 🏳️‍🌈

Running the London marathon has always been an ambition of mine, but I was never successful in attempts via the ballot over the years. Then came my Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis, and I thought my chance to take part in the biggest and best marathon in the world had gone.  We then discovered assisted running with a specialist wheelchair, and after taking part in the Great Bristol, Great Scottish, and Southampton 10k's, Alice and I decided to apply for London. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in this year's assisted wheelchair ballot, so we booked a hotel, and had plans to be part of the MNDA cheer squad.  However, after Alice emailed the organisers detailing my story, and with assistance from the Whizz Kidz charity and Martin Davy from Delichon, the company that made our running wheelchair, on appeal, we were given a place and under beautiful spring sunshine, my dream came true. 26/01/2025 - 'MND is not fun' by David

Motor neurone disease is not fun. I consider myself lucky that my symptoms are progressing slowly in comparison to the average sufferer of my age, and I would like to believe it's due to looking after my body all my life. All that running, football, cycling and swimming must count for something surely? My decline is none the less, very disappointing, and also, so frustrating. I need my stick around the house, and climbing and descending the stairs is not easy now. The other day, Alice and I were in the kitchen and I felt myself falling backwards so I shouted to Alice and she held me up. My legs feel as though they are going to buckle under me, and I know that they will sometime. Until then though, I will plod on until the wheelchair becomes my new best friend.  My hands are weakening too, so things like tucking in my shirt, getting dressed, putting socks or gloves on is not easy any more. 24/11/2024 - "Falling and laughing' by David

Well it finally happened. Unfortunately, I had a fall this week. I knew it would happen one day, and I've been very lucky since my diagnosis in July 2023 that despite a few close calls and wobbles, I haven't actually fallen to the ground. It was quite a gentle fall while I was bending down to turn an electric socket on, so I was halfway down already and my legs just gave way. I fell backwards onto my bum and after a few moments, I managed to sit up, shuffle back against a sofa and pull myself up to a standing position again. Apart from a sore behind, I was OK, but it shook me up, and I was sad for the rest of the day. I told Alice, who was upstairs at the time, and we sat talking for a while about the situation, and after a few tears, we decided that I would use a stick inside, and I requested an occupational therapist to come to assess my needs around the house, as my legs and hands are now very weak.  It was such a shame, as the day before (my fall), I was feeling much more p...
